Why Film Photography is Perfect for Engagement Sessions
Your engagement is one of the most exciting times of your life, and capturing it in a way that feels timeless and romantic is essential. This is where film photography comes in. Unlike digital photography, film brings a soft, organic quality that enhances emotions and creates a dreamy aesthetic that modern couples love. If you’re considering an engagement session with film photography, this guide will help you understand why it’s the perfect choice and what to expect.
The Unique Beauty of Film Photography for Engagements
Film photography isn’t just about capturing an image; it’s about preserving a feeling. The rich colors, natural grain, and depth that film provides make every moment feel like a work of art.
Some of the key reasons why couples choose film photography for their engagement session include:
Timeless Elegance: Film creates soft, luminous tones that give your photos a classic and editorial look.
Authentic Skin Tones: Unlike digital images that sometimes require heavy editing, film naturally captures warm and true-to-life skin tones.
Intentional Storytelling: With film, each frame is carefully considered, resulting in artistic, emotion-filled images.
Soft and Dreamy Aesthetic: The way film captures light and texture enhances the romantic atmosphere of your engagement session.
Film Photography Techniques for Stunning Engagement Photos
Understanding Light and Composition
One of the reasons film photographers create such breathtaking imagery is their deep understanding of natural light. Film responds beautifully to soft, golden-hour lighting, making sunrise or sunset the ideal time for engagement sessions.
The Magic of Medium Format Film
While 35mm film offers a classic look, medium format film takes it to another level with increased depth, sharpness, and creamy backgrounds. Medium format film is perfect for capturing engagement moments in stunning detail.
Color vs. Black & White Film
Most film photographers shoot in color film, but adding a few black-and-white frames can bring a timeless, cinematic feel to your session. Discuss with your photographer how they incorporate both styles for variety.
How to Style Your Film Engagement Session
Your engagement session should reflect your personality and love story. When planning your outfits, location, and overall vibe, keep these tips in mind:
Choosing the Right Outfits
Soft, Neutral Tones: Light and airy colors photograph beautifully on film.
Flowy Dresses and Classic Pieces: Avoid harsh patterns and opt for timeless, elegant styles.
Complementary Over Matching: Coordinating outfits without being too matchy-matchy enhances the natural feel of film photography.
Selecting the Perfect Location
Film photography thrives in beautiful, natural settings. Some of the best locations for an engagement session with film photography include:
Open fields with golden light
Historic city streets with timeless architecture
Coastal locations with soft sand and gentle waves
Botanical gardens full of lush greenery
Props and Personal Touches
Incorporating meaningful elements—like a vintage car, a bouquet, or a cozy blanket—can add depth to your session and enhance the storytelling aspect of film photography.
Finding the Right Film Photographer for Your Engagement Session
Not all photographers specialize in film, so it’s important to find someone who has experience and passion for the craft. When searching for the perfect film photographer, consider these factors:
Portfolio and Style
Look for a portfolio that showcases the type of images you’re drawn to. A skilled film photographer will have a consistent style that aligns with your vision.
Experience with Film
Since film requires a different approach than digital photography, choosing someone with extensive film experience ensures you receive the best results.
Connection and Communication
Your engagement session should feel natural and effortless. Find a photographer you connect with—someone who makes you feel comfortable and confident in front of the camera.

A Complete Guide to Film Photography for Engagement Shoots
Hi, I'm Stee Garman, a Columbia South Carolina photographer and East Coast traveler. Photography has been a love of mine for as long as I can remember. In high school, I went through hundreds of disposable cameras. When I studied abroad in Italy, I bought my first DSLR. Once I got home, I started taking photos of families I knew - just for fun.
Those casual photos quickly turned into part-time work - as families referred me and my business began its growth. A few months later, an old college friend asked me to photograph her wedding. I was hesitant, but I agreed. From that point forward, I knew that’s where I wanted to be: in the celebration right alongside my couples. I've found my true calling in being there for couples on one of the biggest days of their lives. It's an honor I never take for granted, and one that fills me with joy - every single time.
